And I went on and on as it rained harder and harder and I just walked and walked and walked and then I saw

Ay... Caregiver pala.

Warning: Don't read if you're planning to watch it pa lang.

I watched Ms. Sharon Cuneta's movie last night with my dear friends. I was excited to see the movie kasi feeling ko maraming matututunan from it. Well, right after the movie, feeling ko parang bitin tsaka parang hindi appropriate ang ending. But after a post-movie analysis with my friends, I realized that there were actually great lessons to be learned from it.

1. Money isn't everything. I was expecting that Sharon's character will get rich in the end kasi pamamanahan siya ni Mr. Morgan (aka Mr. Grumpy). But instead of money-pamana, she got a book and a thank you letter. And 'yun, natuwa naman si Ate Shawee and nainspire to continue her "thankless" job.

2. Happiness in life begins in happiness for oneself. From the start, Ms. Shawee's life was somehow being led by her husband's plans. Her husband (who was such and idiom and the real Mr. Grumpy), wanted her to give up her beloved job and leave her even more beloved son so that she can be a caregiver in London to help him pursue "their dream". Pero naging super pabigat at karimarimarim lamang si Mr. Husband kay Tita Shawi pagdating sa London. Ang sarap sapukin. Pero in the end (shortcut na 'to), Ate Sharon learned that she doesn't have to follow what her husband wants if she's not happy with that. Ayun. Iniwan niya ang mokong at naging masaya in the end. Yey!!!

3. If you are a caregiver, don't leave your patient alone just to get a kite in the woods. Kasi baka atakihin sa puso habang wala ka, e 'di pagbalik mo, dedo na. Haller.

4. If you are a caregiver and your patient wants to swim in the pool, let him/her wear something naman (unless your patient is a supermodel or his name is Nigel). 'Wag papagswimming na hubad. Haller, medyo masagwang tingnan. Ok?

5. If you are a caregiver in London and nandidiri ka sa trabaho, just say "pounds" continuously and you'll be alright. Self explanatory. =)

6. If you are a nurse, don't act like a doctor unless you're saving a life. Sheteng. Ito 'yung isa sa mga pinakanakakaasar. 'Yung si Jhon na dating doktor sa Pinas na nurse sa London ay may niligtas na buhay pero inaway kasi niya 'yung doktor. Ayun, natanggal sa trabaho. Ano 'yun 'di ba? Haller.

How To Be A Better Person

Be the change you want to see occur in the world around you. We can't make other people be more considerate, helpful, honest, etc., but if everyone were to work on themselves and develop these attributes, our world would be a better place.

Don't be judgmental.
Look for and recognize the good in yourself and in others. We are all capable of so-called "good" and "bad" behaviors and we all have our "good" and "off" days. We are all unique and it is wonderful that we are different and not all the same - in our appearance, our thoughts, our opinions, our likes and dislikes. Being different is not threatening, it is not "bad", it is just "different". Embrace the differences and be happy for the variety. Likewise, forget the concepts of "right" and "wrong". People are not good or bad or right or wrong; they just are. If you were in "their shoes" maybe you would act differently, or maybe not. Being judgmental wastes time and cuts you off from opportunities and meaningful relationships - because you are not perfect either, and your judgment might be worse than the person's you are judging!

Respect.
Don't make the mistake of thinking your rights are the only ones that count. Don't ignore the other person's rights. Our fundamental right is to be respected. Being wealthy does not make a person more deserving of respect and neither does a high-flying career with a fancy title. Respect is not about material issues or where one sits on the social ladder. Respect is acknowledging another human being's dignity and treating them how you wish to be treated yourself. We all came on to this earth equal and we're all checking out as equals. What happens in between is just a series of different life experiences. The poor man who lives in a slum, who cares for strangers, volunteers assistance without expecting anything in return and lives a clean, honest life is more deserving of respect than a wealthy businessman who dresses in fine clothes, lives in a huge mansion, and treats everyone like pond amoeba, cheats on his wife, swindles his shareholders and has forgotten how to tell the truth.

Be a Good Listener.
How often do you really listen to other people? How often do you plan what you are going to say next while they are talking, or allow your mind to drift off onto something else instead of concentrating on their every word? It takes practice to be a good listener, but in being one, you are showing respect and in a position to better comprehend the real message being given to you. You avoid misunderstandings and missed instructions. Furthermore, the other person will appreciate your attention and return the courtesy.

Be interested - not interesting.
This goes hand in hand with being a good listener. People love to talk about themselves and will delight in the opportunity to do so, so ensure you ask questions and take an interest in what they are telling you. Don't worry about them hogging the limelight - you can have your turn during the conversation. Have you ever met someone who only talks about themselves? Count the number of times you use "I" in your conversations. Judging, arguing points, interrupting the conversation, and using "I" a lot are sure signs you need to review your communication skills.

Respond from Your Heart.
We tend to respond to others using our head, not our heart. We formulate stories about us, we defend our ego, or we judge other people or what they have said. If we respond from our heart, we can respond with understanding and a sense of connection. Find something good to say about people and to people. Build people "up" - don't knock them down. Go with your gut instincts.

Be truthful.
There is a good reason for the saying "honesty is the best policy." Nothing good ever comes from lies, and there is a difference between being diplomatic and telling an outright lie. Nobody trusts a liar. If you've made a mistake, well, welcome to the human race! You don't have to lie to cover it up. You don't have to tell your truth "brutally", there are gentle and tactful ways of delivering truths and you should think carefully before you speak. But don't try to be deceitful because it has a habit of coming back to haunt you, and in those situations you are worse off than if you had just come clean in the first place, as uncomfortable as that may seem at the time.

Be helpful.
When you need a helping hand, don't you just love the person who comes up and offers that to you? Wouldn't you love the opportunity to repay them? You can be that person that others look to respectfully with gratitude in their hearts, who will, one day, repay the gesture. What comes around, goes around. If you want people to be helpful to you, you must be helpful to others. It doesn't matter whether this is assisting your boss with a special project you can see he needs help with, or a co-worker who is struggling with a large workload, or an elderly neighbor struggling up the stairs with her arms full. People do remember kindness.

Maintain Your Integrity and Your Dignity.
People with their integrity intact are easier to deal with in work or personal situations. They know where they stand and you know where you stand with them. You will feel better about yourself when you set your standards and stand by them and you will attract those who respect your standards and who have standards of their own. Being a doormat is disrespectful to yourself and to the person 'walking all over you'. It does not allow them to grow and learn to do something for themselves. Learn to say no gracefully. You have as much right as everyone else on the planet to have your own opinion and your own way of doing things, and reminding you of point (1) above, nobody has the right to make you feel 'bad' if you think, feel or dress differently. Remember, "to thine own self be true."

Go the Extra Mile.
I mean this in a couple of ways. First, whether you are either asked to do something, or you are offering to do something, remember that if something is worth doing in the first place, then it is worth doing well. And while you are at it, what little touches can you offer to improve it? For example, who would you rather go to for your shoeshine… Mr. A does a wonderful buff and polish and is timely and not too expensive. Mr. B also does a wonderful buff and polish, he is also timely and not expensive, but he is also cheerful and interested in you and whistles while he works, so after your polish, you go on your way feeling on top of the world! Mr. B just went the extra mile for you. He didn't just polish your shoes, he lifted your spirits and made you feel good. If you are offering a co-worker assistance with copying some documents, go the extra mile and ask if she needs a hand stapling them or collating them. Going the extra mile need not involve a large expense of time, energy or money, but it's value to the recipient is often priceless, and one day, it will be reciprocated.

Say What You Mean and Mean What You Say.
Neither beat around the bush being evasive, nor make promises you can't keep. On the other hand, if you say you are going to do something, do it. Be known as a reliable person. Honor your promises and agreements wherever possible - this stems back to integrity. Prepare to be flexible if need be, but know that you don't have to bend over so far backwards that your back snaps. Being assertive and being aggressive are two entirely different things, and you do not need aggression to be assertive. In fact, you are better off without the aggression! If you are wishy-washy and allow people or circumstances to be unconcerned for your position, you will develop that reputation and find more and more people willing to walk all over you and more situations in which it occurs. Being like this does not prove you are valuable to anybody - it just means you are a 'pushover'.

Tennis Update

I played tennis with Retcher yesterday. What's new?

We did it under the rain. Thus, the court was wet. The balls were wet. We were wet.

I also played barefooted!!! I didn't wear my shoes because I though it would be more dangerous and well, I'd be saved from the hassle of washing my shoes after.

Wow!!! It's my second time to play under the rain and it just felt great!!! The first time was with fellow dormer Mic-mic. He was also my fellow-tennis-addict-competitor a few years back.

Playing under the rain brings back my passion for tennis and the memories of Ryoma Echizen fiercely playing against Shusuke Fuji. Wow! I sound so weird. Haha.

Ayun. Um-english pa ako. Sa Tagalog, nagtennis ako kasama si Retcher. Umuulan. Tapos nakapaa ako. Tapos nag-enjoy ako.

Yes! Finally, after a really really long time, I got to play tennis again. 'Yun nga lang, sa may wall lang ako as usual. Umulan kasi kahapon. Sayang. Sana sa courts na ako next time.

Nananawagan ako ngayon sa lahat ng tennis players. Kung sino man ang gustong maglaro sa umaga man o sa hapon, kindly notify me. Sa mga usual na kalaro ko (Kit, Christian, Raiza, Joan, Karen at Retcher), sana makalaro tayo ulit soon!!!

Wow, I felt a bit rusty while playing. I got really sweaty after just a few minutes of playing. Maybe I need to really work out again and train hard just like before. Well, let's see what happens.

I got my balls back by the way... my tennis balls that is.

Iyan ang mensaheng nais kong iparating sa bawat estudyante ni Jenny kanina habang kasama ko siyang nagbabantay sa klaseng kumukuha ng ikalawang pagsusulit nila sa EngMa 103. Nakakatuwang karanasan ang panoorin ang mga estudyante habang kumukuha ng pagsusulit.
May kani-kaniyang istilo ang bawat isa sa pag-upo, sa pag-iisip, sa pagtatanong at kung anu-ano pa. May naka-de-kwatro, mayroong todo yuko, may nakatitig sa kisame na tila ba naghahanap ng sagot o di kaya'y nagdadasal at humihingi ng sagot sa Panginoon. May ilan naman sa napapatitig sa harap at natitiyempong napapatingin sa akin. Siyempre, tititigan ko naman sila nang diretso at matalim na tila ba nagbibigay ng babala:
Binabantayan ko kayo... Bawal mangopya... Soooooorrrrrrryyyy..... (sabi nga ni Kins).
Ayun. Naging maayos naman ang kanilang pagsusulit. Kitang-kita sa kanilang mga mukha ang paghihirap ngunit hindi sana nila iyon mararanasan kung nag-aral sila nang mainam. Ngunit sa kabila nito, may iilan din namang tila nadalian sa pagsusulit at nakangiti pang nagpasa ng papel at lumabas ng silid. Mainam. Mainam. Mainam. Magaling!
Isang mabuting karanasan na naman ang aking napagdaanan bilang isang guro. Masubukan ngang magbigay ng makalamig pawis na pagsusulit minsan. Surprise final exam na lamang siguro kung sakali.

Walang dudang malulungkot kayong lahat sapagkat hindi tayo magkakaroon ng klase sa darating na Miyerkules, ika-07 ng Mayo, 2008. Ito ay sa kadahilanang sa Biyernes pa darating ang mga materyales na kakailanganin natin upang maipagpatuloy ang paggawa sa inyong mga proyekto. Sa madaling salita, may libreng gupit kayo sa Miyerkules. FREE CUT.

Gayunpaman, nauunawaan ko kung gaano ninyo kamahal ang ating asignatura at kurso kung kaya naman bibigyan ko ng pagkakataong makapagtrabaho yaong mga estudyanteng hindi pa nakatapos sa paghihinang (soldering). Maari kayong pumasok sa mga klase nina Ginoong Gaerlan (Martes, 1:30 hanggang 4:30 ng hapon) at Ginoong Mozo (Martes, 4:30 hanggang 7:00 ng gabi) upang ipagpatuloy ang inyong paggawa. Mangyari lamang na magpaalam muna sa mga nabanggit na guro bago pumasok sa silid at tiyaking hindi ninyo maiistorbo ang klase nila. May kaakibat na kaparusahan ang mga mababalitaan kong nanggulo sa klase. Tiyakin ding iingatan ninyo ang paggamit sa mga kasangkapan sa silid at ibalik sa mga tamang lugar matapos gamitin. Shoot. For the past few days, I've been tiring myself up too much.
Tennis here, basketball there, more tennis here and more basketball there.

pinapawisan pa rin ako. Deymn!!! Nadedehydrate na yata ako. Pero ok lang.

Second time ko pa lang magpunta sa UP fair pero tulad n'ung dati, masaya pa rin kahit medyo scary... haha!!!

Heto ang mga kasama ko... ay, si JR ang kumuha so wala dito. Ang gaganda pamo ng mga kasama namin kaya medyo nahirapan kami dahil dinudumog ng mga JJ's (Jumping Jologs).. Hahahaha!!!

O heto na 'yung pic na nandun si JR. Ang saya saya eh noh? Haha.

Ayun, sumakay kami ng ewan ko kung anong tawag... ruweda 'ata. Haha. basta 'yung umiikot na paulit-ulit. Parang bumalik sa pagkabata ang mga tao. Haha. Saya!!!

Side note: Ang itim ko na yata sobra. Actually, nasa picture ako eh. Hanapin ako kung kaya mo. =)

Last one. Nagpatato ako. Haha. Ayan sa baba oh. Hindi lang kita nang buo pero isang malaking bulate 'yung pinatato ko. Astig nyan 'toh. Para akong maton. Bawal muna ako maglaba sa dorm niyan kasi baka magmukha akong ewan kapag may tato akong malaki tapos naglalaba ako noh! Hahaha!!!

Oo nga pala... ang daming new hairstyles ang aking namasdan sa UP fair courtesy of the JJ people. Salamat sa inyo... kung may nagbabasa man nito. P.S. Paano ba maging member ng JJ's? Please send me the details. Thanks. =)

Ang piktyur sa ibaba ay sample lamang ng hanep na hairstyle. Ang tapang ni Shir, nagpapicture with mamang Goku. Take note. Super Saiyan na siya niyan pero black hair nga lang. Pinoy version eh. Hehe.

Ayun. Overall, it was a fun night. Marami akong lessons na natutunan especially from the short, funny but very insightful skit tungkol kay Bb. Apatetika. Ang saya din ng mga bands. Siyempre nandun ang Sugarfree. At kahit hindi ko narinig dun ang "Tulog na", pag-uwi ko naman sa Ateneo, nandun sila at kinakanta 'yun. Haha. San ka pa? Astig.

Ayun ulit. Salamat sa mga kasama ko. Sa uulitin. =P

My Seriously Funny Interview

Yesterday, I had an interview for Toshiba. Ops. Nosebleed...

Kahapon, na-interview ako for Toshiba. Nasa Manila Peninsula ako ng 1:16 pm dahil ang sched ko for interview ay 1:20 pm. Just right on time. Haha. Naligaw pa kasi ako ng kaunti. And then pagdating dun, saka pa lang ako nagbihis. Kinuha ko 'yung coat and tie from the concierge dahil iniwan ni Papa Christian 'dun for me. (It was a fun experience dealing with the concierge, kasi ang popogi at gaganda ng mga tao 'dun tapos ang pormal pormal nila.)

Pagdating sa waiting area, I had to wait for a pretty long time dahil medyo nagulo ang sched ng interviewers. Nakasabay ko sa paghihintay sina Joan M. at JC. Tumira ako 'nung kape nila para magising. And when my name was called, I handsomely walked and went to the interview room. And after waiting some more, I finally met my two Japanese interviewers. Ayun. Ininterview nila ako.

Ang first question: Please tell us something about yourself. Aba, nashock ako. 'Di ko alam kung ano sasabihin. Haha. Nakakahiya ang mga pinagsasabi ko. Anyway, nagpatuloy ang interview at naging mainam naman. I told them about our splendid thesis and our joyous trip to Taiwan last year.

At heto ang pinakamatinding blooper sa lahat. 'Nung tapos na ang interview ko, tumayo na ako para kamayan silang dalawa. And of course, I was intending to say thank you. And just when I was shaking the hand of the first guy, what I said was: I'M RONELL. What the fudge??!!! Ewan ko ba't ang pumasok sa isip ko eh nagpapakilala ako. What the fudge talaga!!! At heto pa, inisip ko yata na baka magselos 'yung isa, inulit ko pa!!! Kinamayan ko 'yung second guy at sinabi ko ulit: I'M RONELL. What the fuuuuuuuuuuudge!!! Natawa na lang ako after 'nun. Sobrang laki ng ngiti ko paglabas kasi deep inside me, humahalakhak na ako!!! I'M RONELL ba naman ang sabihin mo sa parting shake hands???!!!! Hindi na ako aasang matanggap. Haha. Or sana isipin na lang nila na nagjojoke ako. Haha.

Ayun. After ng interview, hinintay ko matapos si JC kasi papahatid ako pauwi. (Salamat ulit kay JC sa paghatid at sa napakamakabuluhang discussions namin about life and the future. Haha.) Pero siyempre, bago kami umuwi, inexecute ko muna ang aking master plan na dumekwat ng mga tea bags. May table kasi sa waiting area na may coffe and tea. Tapos sabi ni Sir Mamert, 'wag kami mahiyang kumuha ng kape or tea. E 'di hindi nga ako nahiya. Nagpacover ako kay JC tapos nagtangay kami ng 1 of each kind 'nung mga tsaa nila. Haha. Ops. Walang magsusumbong. Ayun. Nakabawi naman ako. Haha.

Pagdating sa dorm, nagpicture-picture pa ako na parang model dahil madalang akong magmukhang tao. Pormal na pormal eh. Haha. Mukhang senador na pogi. Post ko 'yun minsan.

Kahapon... Tuesday, 1:30 pm, kinuha ko 'yung projector from Faura para sa innov class. E'de dinala ko nga sa CTC. Maagang nadismiss ang class. Sa sobrang excitement magjog, diretso kami nina ER, Karen at Mike na magbihis at sabay jog around Ateneo. Pagbalik sa CTC, nasalubong namin si Jenny na bitbit 'yung projector. Hinahanap na pala ni Sir Allan!!! Lagot ako 'dun. Nakalimutan kong ibalik!!!Pero thanks ulit Jenny!!!

Pag-uwi ko sa dorm, nagpahinga ako sandali at pagkatapos ay nag-gym. Ayun, tuwang-tuwa ako kasi nabreak ko ang aking personal record sa bench press (considering almost two months akong walang serious work-out). Ang max ko dati ay 145.5 lbs (67.5 Kg) at ngayon ay biglang naging 155 lbs (70.04 Kg). Ayun, tuwang-tuwa ako. Sabay nagtext si Retcher: Nasan ka na?

SHETENG!!! May PolSci class pala ako!!! Ayun, sabay takbo papuntang room, nag-T-shirt at shorts at tumakbo papuntang room. Pumasok ako na medyo pawis pa at may kalawang ang kamay.

I got up by 7:30 am. Super lamig. Iniwan ko na si Gusmao sa room kasi sobrang sarap ng tulog. I was so excited, I went straight back to my room and changed. Haha. Takbo 'agad sa wall.

Yes. I was alone. Nag-walling na lang muna ako. Sana makalaro ako sa courts ulit, soon.

Yes. It's true!!! I spent my Christmas in a cemetery!!! In Tagalog, ginastos ko ang aking Pasko sa sementeryo!!!

For the first time in Philippine history, ginanap ang Sicat clan's family reunion sa sementeryo para naman daw makacelebrate with us ang nanay ko at ang lola dear ko. Ayun. It was fun!!!
First time kong maghost ng event. Medyo hindi gets ng mga tao ang jokes ko kaya ang dami nilang namiss. Haha.

Merry Christmas po sa ating lahat. I'm sure everyone can feel the spirit of Christmas. Kasi aside from Christmas nga ngayon, marami tayong kasamang spirits dito. Haha.

1. Peace on Earth. That includes the Extremely Cute Engineers of Ateneo. Sana magkabati na ang mga may tampo at away. Peace y'all. =P

2. Everlasting love.

3. Snow in the Philippines this coming Christmas. Pero siyempre sana magsnow lang 'dun sa mga may bahay. Kasi baka pati 'yung mga homeless ma-isnowan, e baka lamigin sila o kaya manigas. Ay. O kaya, 'wag na lang snow. Bahay na lang for the homeless.

Una sa lahat, sorry sa friendships dahil hindi ako nakapagbasketball kahapon.
Nag-attend kasi ako ng kasal ng pinsan ko (kung saan ako lang ang nakatsinelas at t-shirt while others were wearing barongs and coats). =P

Nang gabi bago ang kasal, sa bahay ng bride's mother (my Tita Lita):

Ronell: Ay, 'di po kasi ako makakasama. May meeting po kasi ako tsaka thesis.

The Crazy 48 Hours.

December 13 to December 15. Ang daming nangyari. It was a mixture of experiences: some were sad, frustrating and difficult but most were happy, fun and life changing ones. It was just crazy but super.

1. Friday. Basketball game ng Barkada Team Nicole and then AECES team afterwards. Natalo sa first game pero panalo sa second game. I'm just super duper proud of my game kasi hindi ako masyado ninerbiyos this time and first time ko ever na magfree throw and 2/2 ako. Haha. Siyempre may sikreto ako sa free throw na alam na ng lahat. Then sa second game, hindi na ako nakapagstay to see how ER had his triple double and Kinsley with a great great great move. Aaaargh... Sayang I wasn't there to see it Kins!!! Paulit na lang!!! Haha. Special mention din sina Khel (great fouls and take charge!!!) at Keno (na kasangga ko pero na-block ko kasi akala ko kalaban). Haha.

2. After ng game, kainan at inuman kina Mike. Bertdey kasi ni Mike. Haha. Nag-grocery kami for food and drinks then diretso kina Mike. Super duper duper saya nito. One of the best inumans ever, especially because of the following:
a. My wish came true kahit hindi ako nakakita ng wishing star.
b. Maraming nalasing. Haha. First time ko makita magtransform si Mike.
c. Ang daming hirit kagabi na ibang level ang funny factor.
d. Walang nakahula na si Mrs. Peacock ang killer at gumamit siya ng rope sa hall. One
hour kaming naghuhulaan (Pero hindi na ako maka-isip nang matino. Buti magaling partner ko. Yehes. Haha.) pero may nag-bluff kasi kaya nagulo. Sisihin 'yan. Haha.
e. Madaming dugu-dug at dug-dug moments.
f. Maraming nakakita ng wishing stars. I hope your wishes will all come true.

The Ideal Job Interview

Yesterday, I had my first job interview ever. I won't mention the company but it's two letters and it starts with H and ends with P. The event was a whole day affair, starting from 9 am to 5 pm (supposedly) and I was there by 8:30 am despite the challenges of life that I faced 24 hours earlier (which will be explained in the next post).

Well, I was not only super nervous because it was my first job interview but also because I was feeling super awful. I didn't understand what my tummy was feeling (because of all the challenges of life that I faced 24 hours earlier), I haven't had anything to eat yet and I couldn't avail of the free coffee because I was afraid it might do something to my weird tummy. Aaaaaarghh.... I really wanted to have some hot hot hot coffee!!! I felt like I was drunk 10 times and super puyat 20 times. So whenever I had the chance, I made idlip. Haha. (Sorry, nosebleed.)

There. There are so many stories within this story but I won't mention them all. It's just been a funny funny funny serious day. So now, let's go to the interview part. I finally got interviewed at exactly 4:09 pm by Ejay. Just imagine how long I had to wait noh? So I was feeling tired na and excited and nervous because I might just fart involuntarilly during the interview. Haha.

So here are some of the most memorable questions and answers during the interview and application.

4. What is the most difficult challenge you've had in your college life?
Answer: Lui. Lui Agustin.

5. Do you have any problems with the shifts?
Answer: No problem Sir. I'm used to riding shifts. I can ride space shifts or the big shifts in the sea port.

There you go. Of course, these weren't really the actual questions and answers. Haha. Basta, I had super fun during the interview and let's just say the interview went well and the day ended with a big big laugh.

service hours ko 6 pm to 9 pm. Buti naka-exit na ako sa badminton sportsfest. =P

6. May lab work na due bukas.

7. Wala na akong workout. Nawawala tuloy ang pagka-sexy ko. Este macho pala. Hehe.

Aba, nagustuhan ko kaya kinopya ko ang first 7 episodes. Masaya ang first day dahil nakita ko ulit ang aking beloved ECE family. Yikes. Ang ganda...

Tapos after school, first time ko ulit mag-gym after the sem break and after my injury. Ayun. Ok naman nung umpisa. Pero nung bandang huli na, nafeel ko na ulit ang pain sa aking puwet. Ang tsaket tsaket. Kaya nagstop na muna ako. Better safe than sorry. Hehe.

Then after that, nagkafirst ACENT meeting naman kami sa Cervini Cafe. It was fun! Yey! Free food! Nakatatlong servings ako ng pansit Malabon, dalawang C2 at isang super sarap na brownie (Brownie ba ang singular ng brownies? At brownie ba 'yun eh kulay black siya? Oh well.). Salamat kay Sir Tim for the food.

Then sa server room lang ako tumambay as usual. Nagrereformat ako ulit ng PC para dual boot na siya ulit. And sobrang tagal ko sa windows installation kasi lagi kong inaadjust ang partition para sumakto sa 8 gig. Lagi kasi siyang may butal like 8.04, 7.99 or 8.05 gig. Eh ang corny naman tingnan 'nun. Oh well, after a few tries, nagsakto naman. 'Di naman ako nainip dahil pinapanood ko 'yung "The Big Bang Theory" nga. Well, maganda siya. Imagine, seven episodes in one sitting 'yun. Haha. The neeeerd. Ang cute ng intro song niya kahit 'di ko maintindihan halos.

Ayun. After that natulog na ako. Then I had to wake up at 6.30 am para magprepare for tennis. Nagtennis kami ni Kit from 7 am to around 10 am. So imagine that, 3 hours noh? Grabe. Super tagal ko na kasi hindi naglalaro. 'Nung una, super pangit ng laro namin. But eventually nag-improve naman. Umitim na naman ako. Pero oh well, what's new 'di ba? Haha. On my way back to the dorm pala, may nakasalubong akong sasakyan na pangpatay. Sa may LS school of studies ito. Tapos may sad music na tumutugtog sa background. Nakakaiyak 'yung scene sobra. Tapos habang naglalakad ako, may nakakasalubong akong mga pari na malungkot at slow-motion ang paglakad. Parang sa movie ba. Then sumilip ako. May patay nga yata. Tapos may mga cars na puno ng paring naka-uniform. Grabe. So sad.

There. Pag-uwi ko naman sa dorm, may narinig akong sumisigaw. Well, may umiiyak palang someone sa dorm. HIndi ko alam kung bakit. Sana maging ok na siya, maging sino man siya.

Basic Cake Blog Tutorial

will not change for other ubuntu versions.

The Cake Blog Tutorial

Section 1

Introduction

Welcome to Cake! You're probably checking out this tutorial because you want to learn more about how Cake works. Its our aim to increase productivity and make coding more enjoyable: we hope you'll see this as you dive into the code.

This tutorial will walk you through the creation of a simple blog application. We'll be getting and installing Cake, creating and configuring a database, and creating enough application logic to list, add, edit, and delete blog posts.

Here's what you'll need:

A running web server. We're going to assume you're using Apache, though the instructions for using other servers should be very similar. We might have to play a little with the server configuration, but most folks can get Cake up and running without any configuration at all.
A database server. We're going to be using mySQL in this tutorial. You'll need to know enough about SQL in order to create a database: Cake will be taking the reigns from there.
Basic PHP knowledge. The more object-oriented programming you've done, the better: but fear not if you're a procedural fan.
Finally, you'll need a basic knowledge of the MVC programming pattern. A quick overview can be found in Chapter "Basic Concepts", Section 2: The MVC Pattern. Don't worry: its only a half a page or so.

Let's get started!

NOTE: A quick way to have all the necessary applications bundled together is to get lamp-server installed in your PC. To do this, use:

$sudo tasksel lamp-server

(Terminal commands are denoted by a "$" before the command. Type and enter in your terminal to execute.)

After installing LAMP, you will have apache2, php and mysql installed.

Section 2

Getting Cake

First, let's get a copy of fresh Cake code. The most recent release as of this writing is CakePHP 1.0.1.2708 is the latest release.

To get a fresh download, visit the CakePHP project at Cakeforge: http://cakeforge.org/projects/cakephp/ and download the stable release.

You can also checkout/export a fresh copy of our trunk code at: https://svn.cakephp.org/repo/trunk/cake/1.x.x.x/

Regardless of how you downloaded it, place the code inside of your DocumentRoot. Once finished, your directory setup should look something like the following:

/path_to_document_root
    /app
    /cake
    /vendors
    .htaccess
    index.php
    VERSION.txt

Now might be a good time to learn a bit about how Cake's directory structure works: check out Chapter "Basic Concepts", Section 3: Overview of the Cake File Layout.

NOTE: I suggest that you download the zip file from the cake php website and save it in a directory. In my case, I saved it in /home/ronell. Then extract the contents into a single folder in the same directory. Finally, rename the folder to your desired document root name (In my case, I renamed it to cake). Copy your phpmyadmin folder from /usr/share/ folder and paste it in your document root folder.

Why do I prefer this method? This avoids losing some files whenever you copy and paste the cake folder.

How do you set the document root? First, you have to know that the document root is where apache looks for your web related files. To set the document root, modify the text file /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default as root.

You only have to modify the lines in blue text. As for the AllowOverride, change None to All. This is for mod_rewrite which is mentioned later on .

IMPORTANT: Every time you modify apache configuration files, make sure to run:

$/etc/init.d/apache2 restart

for the changes to take effect.

Section 3

Creating the Blog Database

IMPORTANT: First, create the database. On the terminal, type:

$mysql -u root -p

(then press Enter for the password).

$mysql> create database blog_development;

$mysql> use blog_development;

(Don't forget the semicolons after each command. And you don't type in "mysql>".)

Then proceed to the next commands below.

Next, lets set up the underlying database for our blog. Right now, we'll just create a single table to store our posts. We'll also throw in a few posts right now to use for testing purposes. Execute the following SQL statements into your database:

The choices on table and column names are not arbitrary. If you follow Cake's database naming conventions, and Cake's class naming conventions (both outlined in Appendix "Cake Conventions"), you'll be able to take advantage of a lot of free functionality and avoid configuration. Cake is flexible enough to accomodate even the worst legacy database schema, but adhering to convention will save you time.

Check out Appendix "Cake Conventions" more information, but suffice it to say that naming our table 'posts' automatically hooks it to our Post model, and having fields called 'modified' and 'created' will be automagically managed by Cake.

Section 4

Cake Database Configuration

Onward and upward: let's tell Cake where our database is and how to connect to it. This will be the first and last time you configure anything.

A copy of Cake's database configuration file is found in /app/config/database.php.default. Make a copy of this file in the same directory, but name it database.php.

The config file should be pretty straightforward: just replace the values in the $default array with those that apply to your setup. A sample completed configuration array might look something like the following:

Once you've saved your new database.php file, you should be able to open your browser and see the Cake welcome page. It should also tell you that your database connection file was found, and that Cake can successfully connect to the database.

Section 5

A Note On mod_rewrite

Occasionally a new user will run in to mod_rewrite issues, so I'll mention them marginally here. If the Cake welcome page looks a little funny (no images or css styles), it probably means mod_rewrite isn't functioning on your system. Here are some tips to help get you up and running:

Make sure that an .htaccess override is allowed: in your httpd.conf, you should have a section that defines a section for each Directory on your server. Make sure the AllowOverride is set to All for the correct Directory.
Make sure you are editing the system httpd.conf rather than a user- or site-specific httpd.conf.
For some reason or another, you might have obtained a copy of CakePHP without the needed .htaccess files. This sometimes happens because some operating systems treat files that start with '.' as hidden, and don't copy them. Make sure your copy of CakePHP is from the downloads section of the site or our SVN repository.
Make sure you are loading up mod_rewrite correctly! You should see something like LoadModule rewrite_module libexec/httpd/mod_rewrite.so and AddModule mod_rewrite.c in your httpd.conf.

If you don't want or can't get mod_rewrite (or some other compatible module) up and running on your server, you'll need to use Cake's built in pretty URLs. In /app/config/core.php, uncomment the line that looks like:

define ('BASE_URL', env('SCRIPT_NAME'));

This will make your URLs look like www.example.com/index.php/controllername/actionname/param rather than www.example.com/controllername/actionname/param.

Section 6

Create a Post Model

The model class is the bread and butter of CakePHP applications. By creating a Cake model that will interact with our database, we'll have the foundation in place needed to do our view, add, edit, and delete operations later.

Cake's model class files go in /app/models, and the file we will be creating will be saved to /app/models/post.php. The completed file should look like this:

Because of the way the class and file are named, this tells Cake that you want a Post model available in your PostsController that is tied to a table in your default database called 'posts'.

The $name variable is always a good idea to add, and is used to overcome some class name oddness in PHP4.

Section 7

Create a Posts Controller

Next we'll create a controller for our posts. The controller is where all the logic for post interaction will happen, and its also where all the actions for this model will be found. You should place this new controller in a file called posts_controller.php inside your /app/controllers directory. Here's what the basic controller should look like:

Now, lets add an action to our controller. When users request www.example.com/posts, this is the same as requesting www.example.com/posts/index. Since we want our readers to view a list of posts when they access that URL, the index action would look something like this:

Let me explain the action a bit. By defining function index() in our PostsController, users can now access the logic there by requesting www.example.com/posts/index. Similarly, if we were to define a function called foobar(), users would be able to access that at www.example.com/posts/foobar.

The single instruction in the action uses set() to pass data to the view (which we'll create next). The line sets the view variable called 'posts' equal to the return value of the findAll() method of the Post model. Our Post model is automatically available at $this->Post because we've followed Cake's naming conventions.

Section 8

Creating Post Views

Now that we have our database connected using our model, and our application logic and flow defined by our controller, let's create a view for the index action we defined above.

Cake views are just HTML and PHP flavored fragments that fit inside an application's layout. Layouts can be defined and switched between, but for now, let's just use the default.

Remember in the last section how we assigned the 'posts' variable to the view using the set() method? That would hand down data to the view that would look something like this:

Cake's view files are stored in /app/views inside a folder named after the controller they correspond to (we'll have to create a folder named 'posts' in this case). To format this post data in a nice table, our view code might look something like this:

Hopefully this should look somewhat simple.

You might have noticed the use of an object called $html. This is an instance of the HtmlHelper class. Cake comes with a set of view 'helpers' that make things like linking, form output, JavaScript and Ajax a snap. You can learn more about how to use them in Chapter "Helpers", but what's important to note here is that the link() method will generate an HTML link with the given title (the first parameter) and URL (the second parameter).

When specifying URL's in Cake, you simply give a path relative to the base of the application, and Cake fills in the rest. As such, your URL's will typically take the form of /controller/action/id.

Now you should be able to point your browser to http://www.example.com/posts/index. You should see your view, correctly formatted with the title and table listing of the posts.

If you happened to have clicked on one of the links we created in this view (that link a post's title to a URL /posts/view/some_id), you were probably informed by Cake that the action hasn't yet been defined. If you were not so informed, either something has gone wrong, or you actually did define it already, in which case you are very sneaky. Otherwise, we'll create it now:

The set() call should look familiar. Notice we're using read() rather than findAll() because we only really want a single post's information.

Notice that our view action takes a parameter. This parameter is handed to the action by the URL called. If a user requests /posts/view/3, then the value '3' is passed as $id.

Now let's create the view for our new 'view' action and place it in /app/views/posts/view.thtml.

Adding Posts

reading from the database and showing us the posts is fine and dandy, but let's allow for the adding of new posts.

First, start with the add() action in the PostsController:

Let me read the add() action for you in plain English: if the form data isn't empty, try to save the post model using that data. If for some reason it doesn't save, give me the data validation errors and render the view showing those errors.

When a user uses a form to POST data to your application, that information is available in $this->params. You can pr() that out if you want to see what it looks like. $this->data is an alias for $this->params['data'].

The $this->flash() function called is a controller function that flashes a message to the user for a second (using the flash layout) then forwards the user on to another URL (/posts, in this case). If DEBUG is set to 0 $this->flash() will redirect automatically, however, if DEBUG > 0 then you will be able to see the flash layout and click on the message to handle the redirect.

Calling the save() method will check for validation errors and will not save if any occur. There are several methods available so you can check for validation errors, but we talk about the validateErrors() call in a bit, so keep that on the back burner for a moment while I show you what the view looks like when we move on to the section about data validation.

Section 10

Data Validation

Cake goes a long way in taking the monotony out of form input validation. Everyone hates coding up endless forms and their validation routines, and Cake makes it easier and faster.

To take advantage of the validation features, you'll need to use Cake's HtmlHelper in your views. The HtmlHelper is available by default to all views at $html.

Here's our add view:

As with $html->link(), $html->url() will generate a proper URL from the controller and action we have given it. By default, it prints out a POST form tag, but this can be modified by the second parameter. The $html->input() and $html->textarea() functions spit out form elements of the same name. The first parameter tells Cake which model/field they correspond to, and the second param is for extra HTML attributes (like the size of the input field). Again, refer to Chapter "Helpers" for more on helpers.

The tagErrorMsg() function calls will output the error messages in case there is a validation problem.

If you'd like, you can update your /app/views/posts/index.thtml view to include a new "Add Post" link that points to www.example.com/posts/add.

That seems cool enough, but how do I tell Cake about my validation requirements? This is where we come back to the model.

The $validate array tells Cake how to validate your data when the save() method is called. The values for those keys are just constants set by Cake that translate to regex matches (see /cake/libs/validators.php). Right now Cake's validation is regex based, but you can also use Model::invalidate() to set your own validation dynamically.

Now that you have your validation in place, use the app to try to add a post without a title or body to see how it works.

Section 11

Deleting Posts

Next, let's make a way for users to delete posts. Start with a delete() action in the PostsController:

This logic deletes the post specified by $id, and uses flash() to show the user a confirmation message before redirecting them on to /posts.

Because we're just executing some logic and redirecting, this action has no view. You might want to update your index view to allow users to delete posts, however.

This view code also uses the HtmlHelper to prompt the user with a JavaScript confirmation dialog before they attempt to delete a post.

Editing Posts

So... post editing: here we go. You're a Cake pro by now, so you should have picked up a pattern. Make the action, then the view. Here's what the edit action of the Posts Controller would look like:

One thing to note here: Cake will assume that you are edititing a model if the 'id' field is present and exists in a currently stored model. If no 'id' is present (look back at our add view), Cake will assume that you are inserting a new model when save() is called.

You can now update your index view with links to edit specific posts:

Routes

This part is optional, but helpful in understanding how URLs map to specific function calls in Cake. We're only going to make a quick change to routes in this tutorial. For more information, see Chapter "Configuration", Section 3: Routes Configuration.

Cake's default route will take a person visiting the root of your site (i.e. http://www.example.com) to the PagesController, and render a view called home. Rather than do that, we'll want users of our blog application to go to our soon-to-be-created PostsController.

Cake's routing is found in /app/config/routes.php. You'll want to comment out or remove the line that looks like this:

$Route->connect ('/', array('controller'=>'pages', 'action'=>'display', 'home'));

This line connects the URL / with the default Cake home page. We want it to connect with our own controller, so add a line that looks like this:

$Route->connect ('/', array('controller'=>'posts', 'action'=>'index'));

This should connect users requesting '/' to the index() action of our soon-to-be-created PostsController.

Section 14

Conclusion

Creating applications this way will win you peace, honor, women, and money beyond even your wildest fantasies. Simple, isn't it? Keep in mind that this tutorial was very basic. Cake has many more features to offer, and is flexible in ways we didn't wish to cover here. Use the rest of this manual as a guide for building more feature-rich applications.

Ok na rin. Dumating ako sa Ateneo ng 6 am. Ang ipinagtataka ko pa rin, bakit may mga grade school students na akong nakasabay sa jeep at around 5:30 am? Anong ginagawa nila sa school? Ang aga nun sobra. Naglalaway pa ako nun eh.

Nyahaha!!! Kanina lang, I met with my high school classmate Coreen (Coreen, magparamdam ka para makilala ka ng lahat. Haha.) who happens to be a segment producer now for UniversiTV. Then she asked me to get some "volunteers" for her segment. So siyempre, sino bang students ang nasa school pa kahit sembreak na? Edi mga ECE!!! Yey!!! So we went to CTC 208 to shoot some stuff. Basically, we were asked to answer the question: What is your dream and why?

Thanks to DJ, Karen, Adrian, Jimson, Ted and ER for taking time and helping Coreen. Abangan ang ating paglabas sa TV. At kapag may sumikat sa atin, huwag sanang makakalimot. Haha. =P

Some answers to the question: What is your dream and why? [Some of these are just make believe answers and some are real. Guess who said what.]

1. I want to become a dream so everyone will dream of me.
2. I want to own a zoo because I love pets.

I miss my other activities. It's been a long time since I last played tennis or basketball and a pretty longer time since I last jogged around school late at night. These activities were pretty much part of my routine about one and a half months ago. But I had to temporarily stop.

But now I can do these things once more. Well, not in another week perhaps, due to my injured back. But at least it's soon. Argh. I want to play. I want to run. I want to grab and take the sun. I want to say: Hey, where have all the flowers gone?

Haha. Biglang ganun? I'm just bored.

I think this one's worth blogging about. And, well, bragging about. Haha.
Sandali. Tagalog na lang. Baka magka-anemia pa ako sa sobrang nose bleed eh. =P

Kanina kasi, October 14 nga, nagcompete kami ni KM sa Inter-school Powerlifting Competition sponsored by the Powerlifting Association of the Philippines and Robinsons Pioneer. Well, I just made it sound so cool pero basta contest 'yun na buhat buhat ng bakal in three types of lifts (squats, bench and deadlift) tapos kalaban ay ilang mga students from DLSU, UP and some other schools na 'di ko na-take note.

Weigh in was at 10 am. 71.9 Kg ako at si KM ay 74.5 Kg so basically same weight class kami. In short nagkalaban kami pero teammates kami siyempre. Ayun. The contest went pretty well - may mga ate ('yung scorer na hot + some from the audience), ok ang place (Robinsons Pioneer), dami tao and super helpful ng mga gym-mates ni KM from Zest.

Sayang nga lang dahil hindi ko natapos lahat ng lifts ko. After my first attempt with the deadlift (which was a bad lift), may kung anong nangyari sa lower back ko (baka daw tail bone). Ewan eh. Pero 'nung warm up pa lang naramdaman ko nang may something wrong with my back. Hmmmm.... hindi kaya dahil sa alak 'yun? Haha. (May k'onting inuman kasi the night before. Thanks to Ted, Mike and JL!!! Yey!!!) Feel ko dahil sa alak tsaka puyat eh. Haha. Joke lang.

Anyway, I'm still proud of my performance. Nabreak ko ang personal records ko sa squats and bench. Squats ko ngayon ay 130 Kg (286 lbs.) as compared to my previous record of 125 Kg (275 lbs.). Yey!!! And my bench went up from a lousy 65.9 Kg (145 lbs.) to a still lousy 67.5 Kg (148.5 lbs.). Ang konti lang pala. Pero ok na. Ang first attempt ko sa deadlift ay 135 Kg kaagad eh. Nagkamali yata. Kung 120 Kg muna sana baka nakuha pa. Pero ok lang. Umangat naman. Hindi lang smooth. Hehe. Oh well. Hindi na pinatuloy sa akin after ng first attempt. Tama nga naman. Kahit mabuhat ko 'yun, hindi na rin ako makakaplace. Eh baka ma-injure pa ako. 'Di ba? "Better safe than sorry" sabi nga ni Sir Ed (coach ni KM sa Zest).

Ayun. Si KM nga pala ang nagchampion. Yey!!! Second place ay some chinito from DLSU na sobrang benta sa audience kasi sinisigawan niya ang sarili niya habang bumubuhat. Haha. At ang third placer ay from UP yata. There. At least panalo AdMU. Yey!!!

Great job. =P

P.S. Sana marequest sa "Wish ko lang" na masuportahan ng school ang sport na ito. Kitang-kita ang lamang ng ibang school sa support eh. Sa suit pa lang eh. Haha. (Nagcompete ako na walang suit at puro hiram ang ibang gamit. Salamat sa mga nagpahiram. Hehe.)
